Research tells us LGBTQ+ people are about twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder than their non-LGBTQ+ peers and yet often our support systems for people with substance use disorders aren’t trained to consider the unique needs of LGBTQ+ people. In this training participants will learn history, prevalence, and contributing factors to substance use and substance use disorders in the LGBTQ+ Community. Then, how to understand biases and discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people in treatment and with substance use disorders.
This knowledge will build a foundation to learn about barriers to accessing treatment and recovery. The session will conclude with steps for taking action to welcome, support, and affirming LGBTQ+ people with substance use disorders. In doing so, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge to help LGBTQ+ people with substance use disorders get the treatment and support they need.
