For many, spring signals a renewed connection to nature, health, and wellbeing. As a result of the blooming flowers and trees, we experience the hope associated with the season’s healing and recovery process. Read the thoughts of staff member Jennifer Nickels, MSW, LSW, who serves as the Administrator of Philadelphia Programs and the Quakertown Recovery Center, as she considers the relationship between recovery and the signs of spring:
“I am frequently in awe of our residential supports as well as the quality of treatment, environment, interactions and the outstanding teamwork we share. Residents are able to focus on achieving their goals on a daily basis.
On a crisp spring morning as I entered the residential program in West Philadelphia, I was struck by the beauty of the fresh blooms and the comfort and hominess of the houses where our residents live. It’s not uncommon to happen upon a staff member and resident cleaning the steps to ensure pride in the environment, both inside and out. On this particular day, I looked forward to entering a space that (unlike many other businesses) feels as if it’s a home away from home for many of us.
As I entered the residence, I thought of how grateful I am to work with such amazing people who always make sure that our residents access the highest quality of services and supports. These services are varied, and can include individual therapy, interactions over meals, group therapy and physician appointments, or playing a game of Monopoly to focus on independent life skills. It’s amazing to see everyone join together to ensure that supports are offered in a way that promotes peace and understanding. The pride and compassionate care are abundant. As spring blooms around us, so does a new chance for opportunities at New Vitae.
We offer not only treatment on a day-to-day basis, but a ‘new life’ for our residents as they move into the community with secured supports, aftercare and a chance to set new goals for additional opportunities.
Spring has sprung and we are ready to jump into the next stage for all of our residents to secure recovery and resilience.”
